After the AGM the Junior and Senior Wardens (Peter Silk & John McCurley) presented a future direction for the Guild focusing around attracting a younger and more diverse membership along with utilising modern technology to simplify the management of the Guild. Earlier today the Guild had another fantastic visit, this time around York Handmade Bricks. It was fascinating seeing the whole process from the quarry at the back of the site to the stacks of bricks fired and ready to be delivered. Many thanks to Guy Armitage for the fascinating tour.

Yesterday the Guild had a fantastic tour around the York Guildhall site, it was interesting hearing Rob from Vinci construction describing the problems associated with such a compact site and those being caused by the current flooding, which include the delivery barge being stuck in Naburn.

Last Friday evening was the Guilds 65th Annual dinner with a fantastic after dinner speech by Andrew Chaplin and the awarding of the Guilds medals to Emma Waitzmann, Sam Mayhew and Ryan Wales a fantastic evening was had by all

This evening marked another great year of the York Guild of Building’s Craftsmanship awards with winners form a variety of skilled trades including stained glass, Joinery and Decorating to name a few.
 A huge congratulations to all the winners.

This afternoon we had a second visit to the York Community stadium site this time focusing on the new 13 screen Imax Cineworld cinema, It was fascinating learning about the project and seeing the progress in the last few months from a shell to almost complete cinemas.

The chalanges relating to scaffolding were particularly interesting with it taking almost a week to erect and dismantle the scaffold in each screen and the total weight of scaffold in the building being around 200 tonnes. 

We thank Stephanie from Simpsons for arranging reaching out and offering this tour to us along with Jim and Andrew who showed us around.

30 Scouts and Guides enjoyed a day out at the Snowball Plantation camp site on 22nd September where they learnt how to build brick barbecues and then cook on them. Members of the Guild of Building supplied the materials, with bricks donated by York Handmade Brick Company, and demonstrated the skills needed to mix the mortar and cut and lay the bricks to construct a solid and sound structure.

On 17th September, members of the Guild enjoyed a sunny visit to the new Malmaison hotel currently under construction in the centre of York, with views over the minster from the sky bar. The contractors, Broadley Group, highlighted the challenges of working in a tight city centre site using Zone Manager a delivery management system. Sound proofing and interior design challenges were also highlighted.
