The Masters charity 2019/20
Every year the Master of the Guild chooses a charity to represent for the year they are in their position. This Year, the Master, Michael Hammill chose St Leonard's Hospice which is based in York.
“As this years Master of the guild of building I have chosen St Leonards Hospice as my nominated charity. This is a local and well-established charity who undertake marvellous work supporting patients and families with terminal illness. It is rare to find someone who’s life has not been touched by the sadness of loosing a loved one and the care and understanding given by the hospice has been a comfort to so many people in and around York. I hope you will support me in fundraising on their behalf.”
About St Leonard's Hospice York
St Leonard’s Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life limiting illnesses. They have created a relaxed and friendly environment where every patient is recognised and treated as an individual. With their support patients are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life. This care also extends to support families and carers.
In addition to a team of highly experienced doctors and nurses, they have specialists in a wide range of roles including complementary therapy, lymphoedema care, physiotherapy, social work, bereavement, occupational therapy and spiritual care.
Care is free of charge to patients and their families, but not free to provide. As a charity, they rely heavily on the generosity of the public to raise just over £5.2 million each year to run St Leonard's Hospice. This equates to £595 for every hour of every day. Although St Leonard’s does get some public funding the majority of the running costs have to be raised from donations and fundraising by the local community - businesses, groups and individuals.
